2027: APC Quashes Rumours Of Replacing VP Shettima As Tinubu’s Running Mate

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has firmly dismissed mounting speculations regarding the potential replacement of Vice President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate for the 2027 general elections, labeling the reports as “purely speculative, untrue and utterly baseless.”

In a statement issued on Monday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the APC addressed what it described as a “growing media frenzy” surrounding the issue. The statement noted that while initial stories were subtle, they had recently escalated with specific individuals being named as possible replacements for Shettima.
“Our Party states in categorical terms that the stories are purely speculative, untrue and utterly baseless,” Morka said.

He urged media organizations to avoid amplifying rumours from “mischievous ‘news sources’ of questionable provenance” aimed at sowing discord in the polity.

Recent reports had fueled these speculations, including suggestions that former House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara could be a contender for the role. Dogara himself responded by distancing himself from the rumours, stating, “Leave me out.” Additionally, APC leaders from the North-Central region have cautioned President Tinubu against any such move, warning it could risk the party’s chances in 2027.

The APC emphasized that under current laws and electoral regulations, the ban on political activities remains in effect. “At this time, our Party remains focused on supporting President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima in delivering the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda and entrenching its bold reforms that are now steadily transforming the economy, building prosperity, and uplifting the living conditions of our people,” the statement read.

Morka also called on ministers, senior government officials, and party members to refrain from stoking unnecessary speculations and to concentrate on their duties to ensure the success of Tinubu’s leadership.

The statement comes amid broader discussions about the APC’s strategy for the upcoming elections, with some voices within the party highlighting potential risks if Shettima, a key figure from the North-East, were to be sidelined. However, the official party line remains steadfast in its support for the current Tinubu-Shettima ticket.
