Galatasaray forward, Victor Osimhen scored twice, while Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams each found the target as Nigeria’s Super Eagles crushed Mozambique 4-0 on Monday night to secure a quarter-finals spot in the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Nigeria, who topped their group with three wins from three matches, delivered their most convincing performance of the tournament in the Round of 16 encounter.
The Super Eagles dominated from the outset, with Osimhen seeing an early effort ruled out for offside in the first three minutes of the game. Their sustained pressure paid off in the 20th minute when Lookman curled home clinically from Akor Adams’ cutback to open the scoring.
Five minutes later, Osimhen doubled Nigeria’s lead after Alex Iwobi’s incisive run through midfield released Lookman, whose cross deflected off Adams before the Napoli striker turned the ball home.
Mozambique, appearing in the knockout stage for the first time, struggled to cope with Nigeria’s intensity and offered little attacking threat.
Osimhen struck again early in the second half, tapping in at the back post from Lookman’s intelligent delivery from the left to make it 3–0.
Adams then capped an impressive individual performance in the 75th minute, firing in Nigeria’s fourth after another piece of excellent work by Lookman.
The Super Eagles could have added to the scoreline as they maintained control throughout, combining attacking flair with a disciplined defensive display to shut out the Mambas.
Nigeria will now face either Algeria or DR Congo in Saturday’s quarter-final in Marrakech.
For Mozambique, a historic AFCON campaign comes to an end, while Nigeria march on with growing confidence as one of the tournament’s standout teams in their quest for continental glory.
