Nigeria’s Super Falcons advanced to the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after defeating arch-rivals South Africa 2-1 in a thrilling semi-final clash on Tuesday evening.
The match, played at Stade Larbi Zaouli, was widely described as a “final before the final,” with both sides showcasing their continental pedigree. Goals from Rasheedat Ajibade and Michelle Alozie sealed victory for Nigeria, keeping alive their hopes of securing a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
Ajibade opened the scoring shortly before halftime, calmly converting a penalty awarded following a handball by South Africa’s Bambanani Mbane. The goal reflected Nigeria’s dominance in the opening 45 minutes, with the Falcons controlling possession and creating several opportunities through Alozie and Chinwendu Ihezuo.
South Africa, the defending champions, responded strongly after the break. Their persistence paid off in the 60th minute when Hildah Magaia was fouled by Osinachi Ohale inside the box. Linda Motlhalo stepped up to convert the resulting penalty, bringing Banyana Banyana level and shifting momentum briefly in their favour.
However, as the match appeared destined for extra time, Michelle Alozie produced a moment of brilliance deep into stoppage time. Her stunning 35-yard strike swerved past goalkeeper Andile Dlamini, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Nigerian players and fans.
The closing minutes were tense, with tempers flaring and injuries interrupting play. Ihezuo was stretchered off following a heavy challenge, while several players received yellow cards in a heated finale.
Nigeria held firm through nine minutes of added time to secure their place in the final in Rabat, where they will aim to reaffirm their status as Africa’s most successful women’s football nation.
For South Africa, the defeat ends their title defence hopes, but they will now focus on the third-place playoff as they seek to finish their campaign on a positive note.
