Comrade Alhassan Yahaya from Gombe State on Wednesday in Owerri, the Imo State capital, emerged the new President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
He emerged the new national president at the 8th Triennial National Delegates Conference.
Alhassan, the immediate past National Deputy President of the union, garnered 436 votes to defeated incumbent Treasurer, Dele Atunbi who scored 97 votes and Mohammed Garba who came third with 39 votes.
Deputy Director with Radio Nigeria, Mrs. Abimbola Oyetunde, emerged as the Deputy National President of the union unopposed while Mrs Ronke Afebioye Samo from Ekiti State Council was re-elected unopposed as the Vice President Zone B.
Other National Officers of the Union including the National Treasurer, Comrade Victor Ndukwe, who was the former Abia State Council Chairman were returned unopposed.
The election held under tight security with Comrade Mike Ikeogwu from Delta State as the Chairman of the electoral Committee while the Representative of the NLC President, Joe Ajaero was on hand to witness the election.
Before his emergence as the President of NUJ, Alhassan Yahaya was a former Council Chairman of the Gombe State chapter of the union.
