Former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has pledged his support for the University of Jos (UNIJOS) as it prepares to host the 27th edition of the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) which kicks off on November 5, 2025. The commitment came during a courtesy visit by a distinguished delegation from the university, led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Tanko Ishaya, to Atiku’s residence on Thursday afternoon.
The delegation sought a partnership with Atiku, highlighting the significance of hosting the games in Plateau State amid ongoing efforts to resolve conflicts, boost economic prosperity, and promote youth development. The team, which included consultants finalizing arrangements for the event, emphasized the role of sports in fostering peace and empowering young people.

As the founder of the American University of Nigeria (AUN), Atiku expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, noting that sports is a powerful tool for peacebuilding and youth development—areas aligned with his long-standing passion for education. “I can relate to the importance of sports as a key tool in peacebuilding and youth development,” Atiku stated.
In recognition of his commitment, the delegation honored Atiku as one of the Patrons of Jos 2025 NUGA. The former vice president assured the team of his full support, pledging to contribute to the success of the games and the broader goals of unity and development in Plateau State.
The 27th NUGA, scheduled to take place at the University of Jos, is expected to bring together university athletes from across Nigeria, showcasing talent and fostering camaraderie while advancing the state’s peace and economic objectives.
