Benin City, the Edo State capital, has earned global recognition after emerging as one of the winners of the prestigious Bloomberg Mayor’s Challenge, securing a $1 million innovation prize for its bold approach to improving healthcare delivery.

The international competition attracted more than 600 cities from across the world, with only 25 cities from 20 countries making the final list. Benin City distinguished itself among the elite group, becoming one of only four African cities to reach the global winners’ circle.

The recognition underscores Edo State’s growing reputation for forward-thinking governance and innovative public sector reforms, particularly in strengthening healthcare systems and expanding access to quality medical services for residents.

In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Dr. Patrick Ebojele, the award places Benin City firmly on the global map of innovation and urban leadership.

According to the statement, the city’s winning proposal focuses on practical and scalable solutions designed to address pressing public health challenges.

Reacting to the development, Governor Okpebholo described the honour as a clear validation of the state government’s commitment to innovation-driven governance and its ongoing investment in healthcare transformation.

“This recognition is a testament to innovation, resilience, and the unwavering commitment of our team to transform healthcare delivery in Edo State.

“It reinforces that bold ideas from Benin City can compete — and win — on the global stage,” Governor Okpebholo said.

The governor commended the Edo State Ministry of Health and the team behind the initiative for their dedication and professionalism, noting that their work continues to position Edo as a leader in impactful governance and sustainable development.

He also applauded the people of Edo State for their support and confidence in the administration’s programmes and policies, which he said are focused on improving the welfare and quality of life of citizens.

“Congratulations to my hardworking team and to the great people of Edo State. The world is watching, and we are just getting started,” the governor added.

The Bloomberg Mayor’s Challenge is widely regarded as one of the most competitive global platforms for cities to showcase innovative solutions to complex urban problems. Cities selected through the rigorous process not only receive funding but also technical support and global partnerships to help implement transformative initiatives.

For Edo State, the award represents both an international endorsement of its healthcare innovation agenda and a significant opportunity to further accelerate reforms aimed at strengthening the state’s health system and delivering better outcomes for residents.
