The 2025 edition of the MTN Edo State Football League reached an exciting climax on Sunday, July 27, at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, as BJ Foundation Football Club emerged champions after a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Ancient Intelligence Football Academy.

The final match was a thrilling showcase of tactical brilliance, raw talent, and determination from both sides.

Ancient Intelligence Football Academy gave a spirited performance and pushed BJ Foundation to the limit before eventually conceding defeat.

In the aftermath of the game, Ambassador Ikponmwosa Clement, Chairman and Founder of Ancient Intelligence Football Academy, reaffirmed his commitment to the development of grassroots football in Edo State.

Speaking during the closing ceremony, Ambassador Clement emphasized his academy’s role as a platform for empowering Edo youth through football.

“There are countless untapped football talents in Edo State,” he said.

“Our academy was established to provide a pathway for these young players to showcase their potential. The skill and composure displayed by our team today confirm what we believe—that many of these boys will have the opportunity to play professionally, even in Europe, in the near future,” he added.

He urged young people in the state to seize the opportunities being presented to them and reaffirmed his belief that Edo State remains a hub for football talent in Nigeria.

Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Edo State Football Association (Edo FA), Fred Newton Erhumwunse, expressed deep appreciation to MTN Nigeria, the league’s title sponsor, and to all stakeholders who contributed to the success of the tournament.

“We commend all the participating teams, coaches, club owners, managers, technical staff, supporters, and CEOs for their commitment to the growth of football at the grassroots,” Erhumwunse said.

The Edo FA Boss also extended special recognition to the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), lauding their dedication and professionalism throughout the tournament.

“Particular thanks go to Mr. Paul Ojeisekhoba, Vice Chairman of the Edo FA and Chairman of the LOC; Mr. Adebisi Richard, Secretary of the LOC; and other committee members whose hard work ensured a smooth and successful competition,” he added.

Looking ahead, both BJ Foundation FC and Ancient Intelligence FC will represent Edo State in the upcoming Nationwide League One (NLO) playoffs.

The Edo FA Chairman expressed confidence in their ability to make the state proud.

“Finally, we are immensely grateful to MTN Nigeria for its continued support,” he said.

“Their partnership has elevated the quality of the league and provided a platform for young players across the state to pursue their professional dreams.

“Together, we are committed to advancing football in Edo State and beyond,” he emphasised.

The 2025 MTN Edo State Football League ends on a high note, reinforcing the state’s growing reputation as a breeding ground for football excellence in Nigeria.
