There was palpable tension in the Rivers State capital on Wednesday morning as bulldozers rolled into the State House of Assembly Complex, ‘demolishing it for renovation’.
The Rivers state government allegedly authorized the demolition for renovation purposes amid insinuations that it also has huge political undertones.
A section of the complex was gutted by fire on October 29 as the plot to impeach Siminalayi Fubara as Governor of Rivers intensified.
On Tuesday, however, respite came the way of the Governor as he scored a major victory over his opponents as the Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt confirmed Hon Edison Ehie, an ally of the Governor as authentic Speaker of the State House of Assembly.
The demolition is also coming on the heels of the defection of 27 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers to the All Progressives Congress (APC) with the PDP calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission to declare their seats vacant and asking for the conduct of election to fill them.
Governor Fubara and Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, have been embroiled in a rift over control of the political structure in Rivers.
