Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi, has again criticised the recent governorship government election in Edo State, describing it as the most undemocratic in recent years. He declared that everybody knows who won the election but the undemocratic forces changed it.
Speaking during the Memorial Lecture and Tributes held on Wednesday in honour of the late Pa Edwin Clark, Obi lamented that the labour of our heroes past in Nigeria was going to vain.
“Let’s tell ourselves the reality. Their labour is in vain. We have a country now that is not democratic. We are not a democratic country.
“The election that happened in Edo State, is it democratic?
“Just the last election in Edo, it is the most undemocratic election. Everybody knows who won that election,” he stated.
Obi said , “So, lets start picking the pieces now because they’ve destroyed everything people have sacrificed and laboured for.
“Look at what is happening in Nigeria today. The country people sacrificed for has turned into a crime scene. All we are doing today is stealing, stealing, stealing, stealing.”
Calling for courage and integrity in leadership, he said, “And we have to do something. All we need to do is live a courageous life.
“May God Almighty that calls him home (late E K Clarke) grant him eternal rest and grant us the courage to look into what our father lived for and start picking our pieces.”
This will not be the first time Obi would be criticising the governorship election that held on September 21, 2024 in Edo State.
In September last year, he
described the election as “undemocratic and blatant state capture”.
The former governor of Anambra State stated this in a lengthy statement via his X handle where he said categorically that any nation with such a flawed leadership recruitment process was doomed.
He also called out the government agencies, individuals and university lecturers being used to undermine the electoral process and advised them to be more circumspect in the interest of democracy.
“To the lecturers and others complicit in perpetuating this charade, you must reflect deeply on the roles you are playing in damaging the very foundation of our democracy.” he had said.
