Team Edo’s female football side announced their arrival in emphatic fashion at the second edition of the Niger Delta Games, cruising to a commanding 6–0 victory over Akwa Ibom State on Friday in Benin City.

The one-sided encounter at the Crescent Sports Club served as an early statement of intent from the host team, coming just hours before the official opening ceremony of the Games.

From kickoff, Edo asserted dominance with confident ball control, purposeful attacking play, and relentless pressure that left their opponents struggling to settle into the contest.

Favour Enodumwenben emerged as the standout performer, netting a superb hat-trick to spearhead the rout. Okundia Esosa added one goal, while Agatha Imosili and Victoria Apaneshia also found the back of the net to complete the six-goal demolition.

Edo’s display was marked by impressive discipline and cohesion. Their backline remained compact and assured, while the forward line was clinical and direct in front of goal.

At the final whistle, the comprehensive scoreline underscored Team Edo’s superiority and reinforced their credentials as strong contenders in the tournament.

The hosts will return to action on Saturday against Delta State as they aim to build momentum from their opening-day triumph.

Speaking at the post-match press briefing, Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission (ESSC), Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, praised the team’s performance and the successful kickoff of the football event.

“I watched with great pride as our Edo female football team opened its campaign against Akwa Ibom State.

“The determination, discipline, and attacking brilliance displayed by our girls were nothing short of outstanding. This victory reflects the hard work, preparation, and fighting spirit that define Team Edo,” Enabulele said.

Enabulele watched the match alongside his Delta State counterpart, Onoriode Oborevwori, Executive Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission.
