The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Aminu Kasimu Idris, has commended the Nigeria Police Force for its strategic role in coordinating election security in the FCT.

The REC gave the commendation during a working visit to the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Miller Dantawaye, at the Command Headquarters in Abuja.

Mr. Idris, who was accompanied by members of the Commission’s management team, said the visit was to formally acquaint the newly appointed Commissioner of Police with INEC’s ongoing and forthcoming activities, particularly as preparations intensify for the February Area Council Elections. He noted that the meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss security arrangements for the electoral process.

The REC informed his host of INEC’s plan to commence the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) for newly registered voters, alongside previously uncollected PVCs, from 15 to 19 January 2026 at designated centres across the FCT. He requested adequate security coverage for the exercise, as well as for other electoral activities before, during and after the elections.

He further disclosed that the Commission would organise election security trainings for the police and other security agencies in January 2026. According to him, the two-tier training programme is designed to enhance the capacity of security personnel in the effective management of election security.

In his response, CP Miller Dantawaye thanked the REC and his team for the visit, describing it as a step that would further strengthen the long-standing cordial relationship between the Police Command and INEC. He emphasised the importance of enhanced security coordination and called for more frequent meetings of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) as the elections draw closer.

The Commissioner of Police assured INEC of the Command’s full cooperation and support throughout all electoral activities, before, during and after the elections.

The visit concluded with a group photograph.
