The federal government has initiated the payment of compensation, totalling N2.75 billion, to property owners affected by the ongoing demolition along the right of way of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project. The move comes amidst widespread condemnation and anger over the demolition exercise.
Minister of Works, Engr Dave Umahi, launched the compensation payment process while also criticising Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, for allegedly inciting people in the South East against the federal government over the project.
Obi had voiced concerns about the demolition, particularly highlighting the potential loss of jobs and destruction of investments, including the Landmark Beach Resort, worth $200 million.
Umahi defended the federal government’s actions, saying compensation was being provided even to property owners who had built without authorisation close to the canal. He accused Obi of misleading people and inciting unrest in the South East.
Umahi stressed the importance of wisdom and cautioned against rushing to judgment without understanding the full details of the situation. He underscored the efforts made by the government to address concerns and provide compensation where necessary.
