Judge Frank Caprio, known for his compassionate and humorous approach on the show “Caught in Providence,” passed away at the age of 88 on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. His family confirmed his death, stating he had been battling pancreatic cancer.
Governor Dan McKee of Rhode Island ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in Caprio’s honor, recognizing him as a “treasure” and a “symbol of empathy on the bench” who connected with people by tempering justice with humanity.
Caprio’s legacy includes not only his judicial career, where he served as Chief Judge of the Providence Municipal Court for nearly 40 years, but also his impact on millions through the nationally syndicated show “Caught in Providence” and his presence on social media.
He was known for his ability to provide a lifeline to people who were struggling, offering leniency when appropriate and emphasizing compassion and understanding.

He retired from the Providence Municipal Court in January 2023, but continued to film the show and published a memoir, “Compassion in the Court: Life-Changing Stories from America’s Nicest Judge,” earlier this year. His courtroom was renamed after him in October 2023.
Caprio had announced his pancreatic cancer diagnosis in December 2023, and after completing his last radiation treatment in May 2024, he had experienced a health setback that led to his hospitalization just a day before his passing. In a video from his hospital bed, he had asked for prayers from his followers, emphasizing his belief in the power of prayer and faith.
Judge Frank Caprio leaves behind his wife, Joyce, their five children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
