Decries culture of impunity, leadership failure

Prominent politician Alhaji Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso on Tuesday condemned the “barbaric attack” on the Gari Ya Waye community in Angwan Rukuba, Jos, which claimed the lives of no fewer than 27 Nigerians and left many others injured, describing the incident as “yet another tragic and shameful chapter in our nation’s history.”

In a strongly worded Facebook post, Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State, said the killings highlighted the continuing failure of leadership and a deepening culture of impunity that has turned parts of the country into “killing fields.”

“This senseless bloodshed represents the continuing failure of leadership and the deepening culture of impunity that has turned parts of our country into killing fields,” he wrote. “The recurring violence in Plateau State, and indeed across several parts of Nigeria, can no longer be treated as business as usual. It demands to be treated as the national emergency that it was declared to be by the Federal and State Governments.”

Kwankwaso stressed that Nigerians deserve peace and security irrespective of their background, declaring: “Our people deserve the right to live in peace, security, and dignity, regardless of their ethnicity or faith.”

He extended heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and the entire community, saying: “My heartfelt condolences and prayers go to the families of the victims, the injured, and the entire Gari Ya Waye community in this moment of profound grief.”

The attack, which occurred in the Angwan Rukuba area of Jos, has once again thrust Plateau State’s long-running security challenges into the national spotlight. Kwankwaso’s statement comes amid repeated calls from political leaders and citizens for decisive action to stem the tide of violence in the region.
