… Continues preparations for the convention

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that the Federal High Court judgment on Friday will not derail its upcoming National Convention, describing the ruling as “an assault on Nigeria’s democratic process.”
In a strongly worded press statement issued on Friday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, emphasized the PDP’s commitment to appealing the decision while urging members to stay focused on preparations.
The statement was a response to the judgment delivered by Honorable Justice Kolawole Omotosho at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
“The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) @OfficialPDPNig is appalled by the judgement of the Federal High Court Abuja, presided over by Honorable Justice Kolawole Omotosho today. It is as an assault on Nigeria’s democratic process,” Ologunagba stated.
Despite the setback, the PDP maintains that the ruling does not impede its internal processes. “However, the PDP states that the judgment of the court does not vitiate its ability to proceed with the processes and activities towards the National Convention to elect new National Officers to pilot the affairs of the Party for the next four years,” the statement read.
Ologunagba referenced a recent Supreme Court decision to bolster the party’s position, noting, “Our Party notes the recent judgement of the Supreme Court which affirms the supremacy of a political party in the management of its internal affairs.”
This affirmation, according to the PDP, underscores the autonomy of political parties in handling their own matters without undue external interference.
In a call to action, the party encouraged its supporters to remain undeterred. “The PDP therefore charges its members, Chapters and Organs to remain steadfast and focused on preparations towards the holding of the National Convention of our Party,” Ologunagba added.
Reaffirming the PDP’s role as Nigeria’s leading opposition party and its dedication to legal principles, the statement outlined its next steps: “Nevertheless, the PDP as the leading opposition Party in Nigeria committed to the Rule of Law has accordingly directed its lawyers to take immediate action to appeal this judgment in our unwavering determination to uphold, defend and promote multi-party democracy in our country.”
The National Convention is a critical event for the PDP, where new national officers will be elected to guide the party amid ongoing political challenges in Nigeria.
