Newcastle United on Saturday defeated Manchester United 1 : 0 to continue their sensational run of form.

The game played at St James’ Park marks six consecutive English Premier League wins at home for the high-flying Magpies, who have propelled themselves into the top five of the table.

The lone goal came in the 55th minute courtesy of Anthony Gordon, who has now scored in four straight league games on home grounds. His strike was enough to down the Red Devils, who struggled to create many clear-cut chances over the course of the match. Newcastle also hit the woodwork in the first half via a Kieran Trippier free kick.

The match did have some painful moments for the hosts, as keeper Nick Pope appeared to suffer a serious injury late on after landing awkwardly. He was replaced by Martin Dubravka for the closing minutes. Newcastle did have a late scare when a Manchester United goal was disallowed due to Harry Maguire being offside in the build-up.

Ultimately, Newcastle were good value for the three points, dominating the game for long stretches.

Manchester United had won five out of their previous six league matches coming into this contest, but never really got going on the day as the Magpies controlled affairs.

The result sees Newcastle climb into fifth position ahead of Manchester United on goal difference. It continues an amazing campaign so far for Eddie Howe’s squad, who seem destined to challenge for more European football next season on current form. The future looks exceedingly bright for the Tyneside club.
