Troops of the 13 Brigade Nigerian Army on Thursday repelled a coordinated ambush by suspected armed criminals while responding to a communal dispute in Odonget Community, Obubra Local Government Area, restoring calm to the area after a fierce gunfight.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by Major Yemi Sokoya, Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters 13 Brigade, the incident occurred when soldiers deployed at Ochon and Alesi received credible intelligence about escalating tensions linked to a local disagreement in Odonget. Acting swiftly to prevent a breakdown of law and order, the troops moved into the community, conducted patrols and carried out a show of force that successfully calmed the rival parties and returned normalcy to the area.

However, as the troops returned to their bases, unidentified persons deliberately blocked their route. While attempting to clear the obstruction, the soldiers came under heavy fire from unknown gunmen in a well-planned ambush, triggering a fierce exchange of gunfire.
A contact report from the troops prompted immediate reinforcement from 245 Battalion, backed by armoured vehicles and tactical support. The swift backup enabled the soldiers to repel the attackers and clear the area.
One soldier sustained injuries in the shootout and was quickly evacuated to Jennifer Hospital in Ochon, where he is receiving treatment. Four of the armed attackers were neutralised during the clash, while several others fled into surrounding bush.
In the aftermath, troops have launched cordon-and-search operations in suspected communities to track down the fleeing gunmen and prevent further attacks. A curfew has also been imposed in the affected areas to maintain order and deny criminals freedom of movement.

Brigadier General Patrick Alimikhena, Commander of the 13 Brigade, commended the bravery and professionalism of his troops in confronting the attackers.
“The Nigerian Army remains unwavering in its commitment to protecting lives and property and maintaining peace within its Area of Responsibility,” he said.
The Army has urged residents of Cross River State to remain calm, cooperate fully with security agencies and provide credible information that could aid ongoing operations to apprehend the perpetrators.
