As the nation enters a new year, it is customary to reflect on the past while seeking opportunities for renewal, reconciliation, and a stronger future. In this spirit, the appointment of Honourable Minister Christopher Musa presents a timely opportunity to address unresolved issues that continue to weigh on the conscience of the nation — particularly the tragic events surrounding Okuama in Delta State.

The destruction of the Okuama community, the loss of lives, and the displacement of families remain deeply painful chapters in Nigeria’s recent history.

Nearly two years later, the effects of these events are still felt, not only by the affected families but also by citizens who desire justice, closure, and trust in national institutions.

Of particular concern is the continued detention of Okuama community leaders, some of whom have sadly passed away while awaiting resolution. As the year turns, this lingering situation calls for compassionate review and decisive action.

The beginning of a new year traditionally symbolizes fresh resolve and renewed commitment to doing what is right. The Honourable Minister Musa is uniquely positioned, at this moment, to guide the Ministry of Defence toward a resolution that reflects fairness, due process, and humanity.

A review of the cases of the remaining detainees — and their release where appropriate — would be widely received as a gesture of national healing, a reaffirmation of respect for the rule of law, a confidence-building step between the military and civilian communities, and a forward-looking act that allows the nation to turn a painful page.

Such an action would not diminish the authority of the military; rather, it would strengthen its moral standing and reinforce public confidence.

As Nigeria looks toward the year ahead, citizens across all regions and beliefs hope for leadership decisions that promote peace, justice, and unity. Resolving the Okuama matter with compassion and wisdom would send a powerful signal that the new year marks not only the passage of time, but a commitment to renewal.

It is in this spirit that this appeal is made — with hope that the new year brings clarity, courage, and healing.

Therefore, as this new year unfolds, may God grant the Honourable Minister wisdom to discern rightly, courage to act justly, and grace to lead with compassion. May the decisions taken in this season promote reconciliation, restore dignity, and strengthen peace within our nation.

May the new year open a path to healing — for Okuama, for Delta State, and for Nigeria.
