Former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has lambasted successive PDP-led Delta State governments for neglecting the Burutu and Bomadi axis in terms of development.
Speaking at an interactive session with APC leaders and stakeholders in Delta South Senatorial District—held at Torugbene in Burutu Local Government Area and St. Paul’s Catholic Church Hall, Bomadi—he lamented the region’s lack of infrastructure.
Omo-Agege recounted how his party’s victories in the two local government areas were allegedly stolen through electoral manipulations.
Citing INEC’s official results, he noted that despite the PDP’s irregularities, the APC still secured 48% of the votes in Burutu.
He praised the resilience and determination of the people, particularly the youth and women, who played a crucial role in limiting the scale of rigging.
However, he expressed concerns over the state government’s failure to provide basic infrastructure in Burutu and Bomadi.
Describing his journey from Warri to Burutu as frustratingly slow due to deplorable road conditions, he questioned why a region that significantly contributes to the state economy remains neglected.
“For decades, Burutu and Bomadi have been major economic contributors to Delta State’s wealth. Yet, there is little to show for it in terms of development,” Omo-Agege said.
He pointed out that despite the PDP controlling Delta South’s Senate seat, House of Representatives seat, and two State Assembly seats for 24 years, successive governments have failed to invest in these local governments.
Omo-Agege criticized the Delta State government for citing the construction of flyovers in Warri as a defense against underdevelopment allegations.
He noted that these flyovers, being built by Julius Berger, were part of his campaign promises. He also questioned the inflated project costs, highlighting that Rivers State built 11 flyovers for N80 billion, whereas Delta State is spending N85 billion on just three.
He added that the cost would likely increase due to anticipated variations, stressing that the project should not be so expensive.
Furthermore, Omo-Agege challenged the government to explain why, despite receiving over N1 trillion in FAAC allocations since May 2023, it has failed to construct a simple 20km road connecting Burutu to Bomadi.
He urged the people of both local government areas to demand accountability from the state government.
Emphasizing that political affiliation should not override community welfare, he insisted that the people of Burutu and Bomadi have the right to question how their wealth is being utilized.
The Obarisi of Urhobo land assured them that if the APC is voted into power in 2027, the Ijaw and Itsekiri people will receive their fair share of development.
“For too long, these nationalities have only been given political appointments without tangible improvements in infrastructure and living conditions. This will change if the APC is voted into power in 2027,” he vowed.
He insisted that appointments are not a substitute for real development and pledged to continue advocating for the infrastructure and economic empowerment that Burutu and Bomadi rightfully deserve.
Omo-Agege reminded the people that the fight for development is far from over.
“The contributions of these local governments to Delta State and Nigeria as a whole must be recognized with meaningful investments, not just empty promises,” he declared.
