Napoli forward, Victor Osimhen, has been named 2023 CAF Men’s Player of the Year.
Osimhen beat Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi and Mohamed Salah of Egypt to the award.
His compatriot Super Falcons and Barcelona striker, Asisat Oshoala was crowned as the 2023 CAF Women’s ‘Player of the Year’ at a gala held at Palais des Congrès in Marrakech, Morocco, on Monday night.
Osimhen is the first Nigerian to win the award since Nwankwo Kanu claimed the prestigious gong in 1999.
Oshoala won ahead of South Africa’s Thembi Klagtlana and Zambia’s Barbara Banda for a record sixth time.
The Super Falcons won the National Team of the Year award.
Oshoala was previously adjudged the best African female footballer in 2014, 2016, 2017 2019 and 2022.
Nigeria’s Chiamaka Nnadozie also won the women’s goalkeeper of the year prize.
The Nigerian duo of Michelle Alozie and Tosin Demehin made the CAF women’s best XI.
However, Deborah Abiodun was beaten to the women’s best young player prize by Nesryne El Chad of Morroco.
