… Second trophy in five days
Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, on Sunday scored again as Galatasaray defeated Kayserispor 3-0 to lift the Turkish Super Lig. It came just five days after the club was crowned winners of the Turkish Cup.
Osimhen’s goal came in the 26th minute of the game when he rose above everybody else to head home a Gabriel Sara’s precise cross.
His team mate, Baris Alper Yilmaz doubled the score just three minutes later.
As an encore for the night, long serving 38-year-old Uruguayan goalkeeper, Fernando Muslera, who is expected to leave the club after 14 years at the end of the season, was allowed to step forward to take the spot kick awarded to Galatasaray. He hit the back of the net to bring the tally to a 3-0 victory thus earning them the Champions title.
Although there are two matches left in the Turkish League, Galatasaray’s victory took them to an unassailable 89 points, eight ahead of Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce which is in second place.
The latest win was Galatasaray’s 25th Super Lig title and came days after they beat Trabzonspor to win the Turkish Cup.
Osimhen, who is on a season-long loan from Napoli in Italy, struck a brace in that match, extending his sterling form this campaign.
Sunday’s goal took Osimhen’s league tally to 25 this season. When he got a brace last Wednesday, the Super Eagles broke a 24-year-old record to become the highest-scoring prolific foreign player ever in Turkish football. He eclipsed Brazilian legend Mario Jardel’s record of 34 goals in a campaign.
Losing out on silverware, meanwhile, could trigger Mourinho’s departure from Fenerbahce one year before the end of his contract, local media suggest.
