The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday night strongly condemned former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and his associates for announcing the formation of a National Caretaker Committee, labeling it a “fictitious” entity that deepens illegality and constitutes contempt of court.
In a press statement issued on Monday by PDP National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the party described the move as an attempt by Wike and his “friends” to coordinate their personal political affairs while falsely claiming affiliation with the PDP, from which they have been expelled.
Ememobong emphasized that the group lacks any authority to form such a committee, even if they were still members, and accused them of commodifying party organs in a manner unbecoming of dignified leadership.
“The purported constitution of a so-called National Caretaker Committee by Nyesom Wike and his friends would have passed unnoticed if they had not attempted to falsely cloak it in the name of the Peoples Democratic Party,” the statement read, noting that their expulsion certificates serve as evidence of their non membership.
The PDP highlighted an ongoing legal battle, pointing out that Wike, through Alhaji Mohammed Abdulrahman and Senator Sam Anyanwu, filed a suit on November 21, 2025, at the Federal High Court in Abuja before Justice J.O. Abdulmalik. The suit seeks to nullify the PDP’s recent convention and its outcomes. Although an interim injunction was refused, the court cautioned all parties against actions that could undermine its eventual judgment.
“By proceeding to announce a fictitious National Caretaker Committee, they have acted in clear contempt of the court and have fundamentally altered the status of the two plaintiffs in that suit,” Ememobong stated, adding that this action represents a “further deepening of the trenches of illegality” dug by the group since 2023 to politically weaken the PDP and hinder its role as Nigeria’s main opposition party.
Ememobong reassured PDP members and the public that the party’s National Executive Committee and Board of Trustees remain intact under the leadership of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, and are committed to a path of rebirth based on transparency, equity, honesty, and inclusiveness.
“The public is already familiar with the comical spectacle that this group has become, with each new action overshadowing the last in sheer ridiculousness,” the statement concluded.
Wike, who currently serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, has been at odds with the PDP leadership since the 2023 elections, where internal divisions contributed to the party’s loss. Neither Wike nor his representatives have immediately responded to the PDP’s allegations.
The PDP’s statement comes amid heightened political tensions in Nigeria, as opposition parties grapple with internal reforms ahead of future elections. Analysts suggest this dispute could further fragment the PDP, potentially benefiting the ruling APC.
