Police Urge NLC To Postpone Protest Over Fears Of Infiltration By Proscribed Groups

    on

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has issued a cautionary advisory to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) FCT Council regarding their planned peaceful protest set for today, February 3, 2026. Citing intelligence reports of potential infiltration by proscribed groups and non-state actors, the police have recommended rescheduling the event to avert risks to public safety and maintain law and order.

In a statement released on Monday, February 2, 2026, SP Josephine Adeh, the FCT Police spokesperson, emphasized the command’s respect for the constitutional right to peaceful assembly. However, she highlighted credible concerns that external elements could hijack the demonstration, potentially leading to disruptions that endanger lives, property, and the broader community’s rights.

“The FCT Police Command is aware of a planned peaceful protest by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) FCT Council,” Adeh stated, underscoring the need for proactive measures to prevent any escalation.

The advisory comes amid heightened security vigilance in the capital, where protests have historically drawn large crowds and occasional unrest.

Organizers of the NLC protest have not yet publicly responded to the police’s suggestion, but the command has reiterated its commitment to protecting lawful activities. Residents of Abuja are encouraged to remain vigilant and cooperate with security forces to ensure the city remains peaceful.

This development reflects ongoing tensions between labor unions and authorities, as the NLC often mobilizes demonstrations to address economic grievances, worker rights, and policy issues. With the protest originally slated for today, any decision to reschedule could impact turnout and momentum.

    The full statement reads:

The FCT Police Command is aware of a planned peaceful protest by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) FCT Council scheduled for Tuesday, 3rd February 2026.

While the Command respects the constitutional right to peaceful assembly, intelligence reports indicate plans by proscribed groups and other non-state actors to infiltrate and hijack the protest, posing a risk to public peace and safety.

In the interest of public safety, the FCT Police Command has advised the organizers to consider rescheduling the protest to prevent any breakdown of law and order and to protect lives, property, and the rights of other residents.

The Command remains committed to safeguarding all lawful activities and urges residents to continue cooperating with security agencies to keep the FCT peaceful and secure.
