The Rivers State House of Assembly has dismissed reports suggesting that impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, have been withdrawn, insisting that the process is still ongoing.
The Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, had on Thursday commenced impeachment proceedings against the governor and his deputy, serving them notices containing eight allegations of gross misconduct.
However, rumours circulated on social media on Friday claiming that the lawmakers had halted or withdrawn the impeachment notices.
Reacting, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Dr. Enemi Alabo George, said the reports were false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Friday evening, George stated that the impeachment process, initiated on January 8, 2026, was progressing in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
According to him, the Speaker had duly forwarded the notices of allegations to both the governor and the deputy governor, adding that the Assembly was awaiting their responses as required by law.
“The Rivers State House of Assembly wishes to inform the good people of Rivers State that the impeachment process commenced by the House is fully on course in accordance with Section 188 of the Constitution,” he said.
George stressed that the House was constitutionally empowered to check infractions by the governor, deputy governor or any other public officer in the state, noting that lawmakers remained duty-bound to uphold the rule of law.
He accused unnamed individuals and media platforms of spreading false narratives aimed at misleading the public and causing disaffection between the Assembly and Nigerians.
“We call on the public to disregard claims that the process has been halted or discontinued. Such narratives are false and intended to distract the House from its constitutional responsibilities,” he added.
The lawmaker reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to carrying out its duties without intimidation, threats or blackmail, while thanking the people of Rivers State and other stakeholders for their support and prayers.
