Human rights activist and 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, was released from Nigerian police custody on Friday, August 8, 2025, after a two-day detention. Sowore announced his release on social media, describing his detention as “unjust, illegal, and unwarranted” and attributing his freedom to pressure from supporters and the #RevolutionNow movement. His arrest on Wednesday, August 6, followed an invitation from the Inspector General of Police’s Monitoring Unit, with allegations of forgery and cyberbullying cited by police. The detention sparked protests in Abuja, Lagos, Osun, and Oyo states, as well as condemnation from figures like Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi. Sowore emphasized that his release was not a cause for celebration but thanked supporters for their solidarity.
