The Supreme Court has reserved its judgement in the Edo State Governorship Election case involving Dr Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Senator Monday Obekpolo of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The presiding judge, Justice Garba Lawal, announced that the date for judgment would be communicated to the parties involved following the conclusion of legal arguments from all sides.
Ighodalo, whose argument was marshalled by legal luminary, Ken Mozia, SAN, urged the court to overturn Obekpolo’s victory and declare him the rightful winner of the September 21, 2024 election. He claimed that he secured the highest number of valid votes cast in the election.
But the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), represented by Kanu Agabi, also a Senior Advocate, prayed for a total dismissal of the appeal.
Agabi, said the PDP and Ighodalo had already invalidated the election process by touting it as unlawful because of alleged violations of the Electoral Act 2022.
Agabi urged the court to reject the appeal on the basis of contradiction and lack of substance.
