Team Edo on Thursday, commenced athlete trials ahead of the second edition of the Niger Delta Games scheduled to hold in Benin City, Edo State, from February 20 to 27, signalling the start of final preparations for the regional multi-sport event.
The host state opened the exercise with athletics, as officials of the Edo State Athletics Association, coaches and athletes converged on the track and field arena in the early hours for an intense selection session.
Athletes were tested across several events, including the 100m, 200m and 400m races, as well as the long jump, triple jump, high jump, javelin, discus and hammer throw.
Both emerging talents and established athletes took part in the trials, displaying competitiveness and determination as they sought to secure places on the final team list. Some of the athletes, including javelin thrower Emmanuel Shakamomodu, long jumper Ibrahim Haamidu and female long jumper Jenifer Osemwengie, expressed confidence in their preparation and readiness to deliver medals for Edo State.

They noted that the organisation of the Niger Delta Games by Dunamis Icons Limited in partnership with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has further boosted their motivation, adding that they look forward to the excitement and exposure the competition will bring in February.
Speaking after the session, Head Coach of the Edo State Athletics Association, Thadeus Omodiale, said the association had maintained an early preparation culture ahead of major competitions.
“We are about 90 percent ready for the Niger Delta Games. The trials started today and it went very well. We already have an idea of those who can deliver, but the exercise is necessary to ensure proper and fair selection of athletes,” Omodiale said.
He added that full-scale training would begin next week as part of the final phase of preparation for the Games.

Also speaking, the Director of Sports Development and Operations, Pastor Osayomore Aghahowa, declared Edo State’s readiness for the competition.
According to him, the athlete registration process has been concluded, while trials have commenced and will continue in the coming days to ensure that only the best athletes represent the state at the Niger Delta Games.
With preparations now in top gear, Team Edo is aiming to make a strong impression as host when the Games commence later this month.
