The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) will hold the fourth edition of the Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture on July 23 in Lagos, with discussions expected to focus on the role of the media, the electoral umpire and voters in strengthening credible elections in Nigeria.
The lecture, scheduled to take place at the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, has as theme: “The Media, INEC, Voters and Path to Credible Elections,” according to a statement jointly signed by the Guild’s President, Eze Anaba, and General Secretary, Onuoha Ukeh.
Professor Sylvester Odion Akhaine of the Department of Political Science, Lagos State University, will deliver the memorial lecture, while former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, will serve as chairman of the occasion.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is expected as Chief Host and Special Guest of Honour, while the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, alongside senior journalists, media executives, public officials and civil society representatives are also expected at the event.
Among those billed to attend are former Ogun State Governor and veteran journalist, Chief Segun Osoba, publisher of Vanguard newspapers, Uncle Sam Amuka, as well as managing directors and editors of print, broadcast and online media organisations.
The Guild also said students and lecturers of mass communication and journalism from Caleb University, Lagos State University, Yaba College of Technology and the Nigerian Institute of Journalism would participate in the event.
The annual lecture series was instituted by the Guild in 2023 to honour the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande, a former President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, former Governor of Lagos State and former Minister of Works.
According to the Guild, the lecture provides a platform for media professionals, policymakers and civil society actors to examine issues relating to governance, nation-building and the role of the press in Nigeria’s democracy.
“The Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture continues to serve as a platform for thought leadership, policy debate and national introspection, while keeping alive the standard Jakande set in journalism and public service,” the statement said.
The inaugural lecture in 2023 was delivered by Chief Felix Adenaike, a Fellow of the Guild. Prince Nduka Obaigbena, Chairman of ThisDay and Arise News, delivered the 2024 lecture on “Rapid Changing Media Landscape: Survival Strategies,” while Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, presented the 2025 lecture titled “Journalism and the Challenge of Nation-Building in a Multi-Ethnic Society.”
