Veteran basketball administrator Sam Ahmedu is bringing nearly three decades of experience within the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) to the Nigeria Basketball Federation’s (NBBF) newly constituted 2026–2030 board, following his confirmation as the international body’s representative.
In a letter dated October 22, 2026, NBBF President Dr Mustapha Abdullahi welcomed Ahmedu to the board, describing his wealth of experience, institutional knowledge and international exposure as critical assets in the federation’s drive to strengthen Nigerian basketball and deepen its relationship with FIBA.
Ahmedu’s appointment is particularly significant given his longstanding involvement in basketball administration, having served within FIBA since 1997, a record the NBBF president described as a valuable asset to the new board.
Abdullahi said Ahmedu’s institutional knowledge, international exposure and extensive experience would be invaluable as the federation works to reposition Nigerian basketball and build a stronger, more progressive and successful basketball community.
“Your wealth of experience, institutional knowledge, and international exposure will be invaluable as we work collectively to strengthen the Federation, deepen our relationship with FIBA, and advance the development of basketball in Nigeria,” the NBBF president stated.
He also expressed optimism about working with Ahmedu and other board members to pursue the federation’s development objectives during the 2026–2030 tenure.
Ahmedu’s presence on the board provides a link between Nigeria’s basketball administration and the international basketball community at a time when effective governance, institutional stability and stronger international engagement remain important to the sport’s development.
His long association with FIBA is expected to bring valuable administrative insight to the board as it seeks to improve the organisation and competitiveness of basketball in the country.
The confirmation also underscores the importance of sustained engagement with FIBA in advancing Nigeria’s interests within the international basketball system.
Abdullahi, while welcoming Ahmedu aboard, reiterated his commitment to a productive working relationship with all members of the new board in pursuit of a common vision for Nigerian basketball.
The 2026–2030 board is expected to provide leadership for the federation’s programmes and development priorities over the next four years, with stakeholders looking to the new administration to strengthen the sport’s structures and create a more sustainable future for Nigerian basketball.
