Atiku: ADC The New Face Of Opposition In Nigeria

on

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as Nigeria’s emerging true opposition force, positioned with the ideals, structure, and determination needed to challenge and defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in upcoming elections.

In a statement shared on his verified X account (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, April 18, 2026, Atiku recounted hosting stakeholders of the Adamawa State chapter of the ADC at his Abuja residence the previous evening. The visit, he said, deeply moved him and offered a timely opportunity to reinforce the path forward for the party in his home state.

“I thanked them for the gesture and reminded the new state leadership that unity is now their sacred duty: to heal divisions, carry everyone along, and lead with fairness,” Atiku wrote.

He expressed strong conviction in the ADC’s rising profile, describing it as “Nigeria’s true opposition force. One that is strong in ideals, structure, and resolve, and ready to challenge and defeat the failing APC in the elections ahead.”

The meeting comes amid broader efforts by the ADC to consolidate its presence across Nigeria. The party has been actively engaging stakeholders, reviewing membership registration and mobilisation strategies, and addressing internal cohesion — particularly in Adamawa, where Atiku has previously mediated to ensure unity among factions.

Atiku’s endorsement of the ADC as the viable alternative reflects growing realignments within Nigeria’s opposition landscape. The party, now led nationally by former Senate President, Senator David Mark, has attracted notable figures and is positioning itself as a platform capable of mounting a credible challenge to the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Political observers see Atiku’s remarks as both a morale booster for ADC members in Adamawa and a broader signal of the former Vice President’s commitment to building a formidable opposition coalition.

His emphasis on unity, inclusiveness, and fairness underscores a recurring theme in his political engagements: the need for opposition parties to present a cohesive front against perceived governance failures.

Atiku’s assertion that the ADC stands ready to “defeat the failing APC” is likely to resonate with citizens seeking alternatives. Whether the party can translate this momentum into electoral success will depend on sustained unity, effective grassroots mobilisation, and the ability to articulate a compelling vision for national renewal.

For now, Atiku’s message is clear: the ADC is no longer a peripheral player — it is stepping forward as the new face of opposition in Nigeria.
