The Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission has assured residents of the state that it will conduct what it described as the most credible, free and fair local government election in Nigeria.
The Commissioner in charge of Information, Voter Education and Publicity, Mr. Collins Agbo, gave the assurance while delivering a lecture titled “Media Involvement in an Election” at a one-day workshop organized by Radio Nigeria Unity FM, Abakaliki on Friday.
Agbo said the commission remains committed to conducting a free, fair, credible, peaceful, transparent and inclusive local government election across the state on August 22, 2026.
According to him, the commission cannot achieve its objectives without the cooperation and support of professional, objective and trustworthy media organizations.
He noted that the media plays a critical role in strengthening democracy through voter education, dissemination of accurate information and promotion of peaceful participation in the electoral process.
“The resolve of EBSIEC is to conduct free, fair, credible, peaceful, transparent and inclusive elections. However, this cannot be achieved without the support of a professional and responsible media,” Agbo stated.
The EBSIEC spokesman urged journalists and media practitioners to uphold professionalism and ethical standards in election coverage, stressing that unbiased reporting remains essential to a peaceful and widely accepted electoral outcome.
He further called on media organizations to intensify voter education campaigns ahead of the polls and use their platforms to mobilize eligible voters to participate actively in the electoral process.
Agbo appealed to residents of the state to make responsible use of their Permanent Voter Cards , noting that the local government election will be conducted across the state’s 171 wards and 2,947 polling units on August 22, 2026.
