The NDC-Peter Obi Support Network (NDC-POSN) has condemned what it described as the alleged harassment and intimidation of the party’s 2027 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, calling on the Federal Government to investigate the claims and guarantee his safety.
In a statement on Wednesday in Abuja by its spokesperson, Mrs. Mercy L. Akums, the support group expressed concern over remarks made by Obi during an interview on the “With Chude” programme, where he alleged that he had been subjected to persistent intimidation and deliberate frustration by the Federal Government.
According to the group, Obi claimed that the prevailing situation had raised fears about his personal safety and political future ahead of the 2027 general election.
The former Anambra State governor was quoted as saying that “with the way this government is going, I may not even be alive to contest the 2027 election,” alleging that every aspect of his livelihood was being deliberately frustrated. He also cited an incident in which his vehicle was reportedly locked at an airport while other vehicles were allowed access.
Obi further alleged that associates had become reluctant to greet him publicly or invite him to social events for fear of possible government reprisals.
Reacting to the claims, the NDC-POSN said any form of targeted harassment, economic sabotage, intimidation or social isolation of political opponents constituted a threat to Nigeria’s democracy and could undermine confidence in the electoral process.
The group declared its solidarity with Obi and the Obi-Kwankwaso (OK) Team, insisting that opposition figures must be allowed to participate freely in the nation’s democratic process without fear or intimidation.
It called on the Federal Government to conduct a transparent investigation into the allegations and ensure that no individual or agency engages in actions capable of endangering lives or frustrating lawful political activities.
The support group also urged security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, to provide adequate protection for Obi, his family and other political actors.
Reaffirming its commitment to mobilising support for the NDC presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in the 2027 election, the organisation urged its members to remain peaceful, law-abiding and focused on pursuing a democratic change of government.
