Nigeria has launched an ambitious diplomatic push to unlock fresh employment opportunities for its citizens and strengthen strategic energy partnerships with Qatar, as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to translate foreign policy into tangible economic gains.
The initiative gathered momentum on Sunday in Doha when Nigeria’s Ambassador to Qatar, Mahmood Yakubu, held separate high-level meetings with Qatar’s Minister of Labour, Ali bin Saeed bin Samikh Al Marri, and the leadership of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), in engagements expected to boost labour mobility, attract investment and reinforce Nigeria’s position in the global gas industry.
The labour talks focused on expanding employment opportunities for skilled and professional Nigerians in Qatar, one of the Middle East’s fastest-growing economies. The discussions also explored avenues for strengthening bilateral cooperation on labour migration, workforce development and the welfare of Nigerians seeking legitimate employment abroad.
Diplomatic sources said Ambassador Yakubu emphasised that creating overseas employment opportunities for Nigerians is a major priority of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s foreign policy agenda, anchored on the administration’s 4D Doctrine—Democracy, Development, Demography and Diaspora—which seeks to deploy diplomacy as a catalyst for economic growth and national development.
The envoy stressed that Nigeria’s foreign missions are increasingly being repositioned as economic diplomacy centres tasked with attracting investments, opening international markets and securing jobs for Nigerians, rather than merely performing traditional diplomatic functions.
The meetings come at a time when the Federal Government is seeking to expand legal migration pathways for Nigerian professionals, curb irregular migration and maximise the enormous economic benefits of diaspora engagement, including remittances, technology transfer and foreign direct investment.
In a second strategic engagement, Ambassador Yakubu hosted the Secretary-General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum, Dr. Philip Mshelbila, who led a delegation of the organisation’s leadership for discussions on deepening cooperation in the global gas sector.
The meeting highlighted Nigeria’s growing influence within the GECF, which is headquartered in Doha and comprises many of the world’s leading natural gas-producing nations. Nigeria currently occupies a strategic position in the organisation, with the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, serving as Chairman of the Forum’s ministerial meetings.
The discussions centred on opportunities for expanding Nigeria’s gas economy, promoting investments across the gas value chain and strengthening international collaboration as the country seeks to leverage its vast natural gas reserves to drive industrialisation, energy security and economic diversification.
Analysts say the twin engagements underscore Abuja’s determination to reposition economic diplomacy as a key instrument for addressing unemployment, attracting foreign investment and enhancing Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global energy market.
They noted that the simultaneous pursuit of labour agreements and energy partnerships reflects a broader strategy by the Tinubu administration to ensure that diplomatic engagements deliver measurable economic outcomes for Nigerians.
With Qatar remaining one of the world’s leading energy producers and an increasingly important destination for skilled foreign workers, observers believe the latest diplomatic offensive could open a new chapter in Nigeria-Qatar relations, creating opportunities for thousands of Nigerians while strengthening cooperation in one of the world’s most strategic energy corridors.
