In what has been described as a landmark educational intervention, a philanthropist and Chief Executive Officer of Zelunjo Empowerment Foundation, Barr. Ogalagu Tochukwu, has sponsored the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) registration fees for 1,900 indigent students across Ebonyi State at a cost of ₦66.5 million.
The cheque was presented on Saturday during the 2026 WAEC Registration Flag-Off ceremony held at Practicing School, Ezzamgbo, in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state.
The gesture was widely applauded by education stakeholders, parents and beneficiaries, who described it as one of the largest private-sector interventions in support of secondary education in the state.
Speaking at the event, Barr. Ogalagu said the initiative was borne out of his desire to ensure that no child is denied access to education because of financial hardship.
“Education is the greatest gift we can give to our children. It is the foundation upon which a better future is built. No student should be prevented from writing WAEC because his or her parents cannot afford the registration fee,” he said.

The philanthropist noted that the sponsorship was part of the foundation’s commitment to human capital development and youth empowerment, stressing that investing in education remains the most effective way to transform society.
“This ₦66.5 million support is an investment in the future of Ebonyi State. When we educate our young people, we reduce poverty, crime and unemployment while creating leaders who will move our society forward,” Ogalagu stated.
He urged the beneficiaries to take their studies seriously and justify the confidence reposed in them through academic excellence and good conduct.
“I encourage every beneficiary to remain focused and committed to their studies. This opportunity should inspire you to work harder and make your families and the state proud,” he added.
Some of the students and parents who benefited from the programme expressed gratitude to the donor, describing the intervention as a lifeline for families struggling with the rising cost of education. They said the support had relieved them of a major financial burden and renewed hope for the future of the beneficiaries.
The event attracted government officials, education administrators, traditional rulers, community leaders and members of the public, who commended Barr. Ogalagu’s generosity and called on other wealthy individuals and corporate organizations to emulate his commitment to educational development and youth empowerment.
