US President, Donald Trump, may be in for a very difficult remaining two years of his administration following the take over of the Congress by Democrats.
The Dems gained control of the Senate and the House of Representatives, securing at least a 51-49 majority in midterm elections and ending the Republicans’ majority rule.
The Dems snatched the two chambers from Republicans on Tuesday night, ending the majority in the upper chamber of Congress and making it a disastrous night for the president and his party.
According to the Associated Press, Democrats won in Texas, Kansas, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Ohio. They also kept several seats they already held.
Before the election, Republicans held a 53-47 Senate majority. This meant Democrats needed to gain four seats to take control.
In Texas, Democrat James Talarico defeated his Republican opponent, ending decades of Republican control in statewide Senate races.
This shift in Senate control is likely to have a big impact on Trump’s last two years as president.
With Democrats now holding the Senate majority, they will have greater influence over legislative proceedings, committee investigations, and confirming presidential nominees, including federal judges.
Meanwhile, President Trump had rare praise for rival Democrats on Tuesday, saying they had done a “good job” after they routed his Republican Party in the midterm elections.
“I think the Democrats did a good job. I really do. I think they did a good job. They fought hard,” Trump told Fox News, adding that there was a “mood in the air” and that “I shouldn’t feel guilty.”
President Donald Trump said he would accept the results of US midterm elections — but quickly sought to shift the blame for the historic rout to his fellow Republicans.
