Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest delivered commanding performances on Thursday night to set up a compelling all-English semi-final encounter in the UEFA Europa League.

Villa, under the astute guidance of Unai Emery, produced a dominant display at Villa Park, sweeping aside Bologna with a resounding 4-0 victory to seal a comprehensive 7-1 aggregate triumph. Already holding a 3-1 advantage from the first leg in Italy, the Premier League side asserted their superiority early, combining fluid attacking play with clinical finishing.

Ollie Watkins opened the scoring in the 16th minute, capping a beautifully orchestrated 14-pass move initiated by Morgan Rogers. The goal marked Watkins’ 100th for the club and cemented his place as Villa’s leading scorer in European competitions. Despite Rogers seeing a first-half penalty saved by Federico Ravaglia, Villa maintained their momentum, with Emiliano Buendía doubling the lead moments later with a powerful strike.

Rogers redeemed himself before the interval, finding the net for the first time in 12 matches, while Ezri Konsa added a late fourth to underline Villa’s authority. The result sends Villa into their second European semi-final under Emery, reinforcing his reputation as one of the competition’s most accomplished tacticians.

At the City Ground, Nottingham Forest secured a historic return to the European last four with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over FC Porto, advancing 2-1 on aggregate. The match turned early when Porto defender Jan Bednarek was dismissed in the eighth minute for a reckless challenge on Chris Wood, leaving the visitors at a numerical disadvantage.

Forest capitalised swiftly, with Morgan Gibbs-White scoring the decisive goal in the 12th minute, his effort taking a deflection before looping beyond the goalkeeper. The midfielder’s celebration, holding up a shirt bearing Elliot Anderson’s name, added an emotional dimension to the evening as the absent player mourned a personal loss.

Despite their advantage, Forest were tested in the latter stages, with Porto striking the woodwork twice through William Gomes and Alan Varela. However, resilience and defensive discipline ensured progression, marking their first European semi-final appearance since the 1983–84 campaign.

Elsewhere, SC Freiburg advanced to their maiden European semi-final with a 3-1 victory over Celta Vigo, completing a dominant 6-1 aggregate win. Goals from Igor Matanović and a brace by Yuito Suzuki sealed the result, rendering Williot Swedberg’s late effort inconsequential.

Freiburg will now face Sporting Braga, who produced a spirited comeback to defeat Real Betis 4-2 on the night and 5-3 on aggregate. After early goals from Antony and Abde Ezzalzouli put Betis in control, Braga responded with determination. Pau Víctor ignited the comeback before Vitor Carvalho levelled shortly after the restart. Ricardo Horta converted from the spot to put Braga ahead, and Jean-Baptiste Gorby sealed a memorable turnaround.

With two high-stakes semi-finals now confirmed, the stage is set for a captivating conclusion to this season’s Europa League, highlighted by a fiercely anticipated all-English clash that underscores the growing strength and depth of Premier League sides in European competition.
