The Delta State Government has concluded arrangements for the commencement of the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the ECN/Otu-Jeremi/Udu Road, following a stakeholders’ meeting involving the contractor and representatives of host communities aimed at ensuring the smooth execution of the project.
The meeting, held on Friday at the office of the Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, brought together officials of Niger Cat Construction Limited, government representatives and leaders from the affected communities to fine-tune plans for the delivery of the road project.
Addressing the stakeholders, Izeze commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for approving the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the ECN/Otu-Jeremi/Udu Road, describing the project as another demonstration of the administration’s commitment to infrastructure development and improved living standards across Delta State.
He charged the contractor to complete the project within the stipulated timeframe, describing the road as a critical infrastructure that would enhance economic activities and improve the quality of life of residents in the affected communities.
He stressed the need for a harmonious relationship between the contractor and the host communities throughout the construction period, noting that sustained cooperation was essential to delivering the project without unnecessary interruptions.
The commissioner announced the appointment of a Special Project Coordinator and introduced community representatives who would serve as liaison officers between the government, the contractor and the host communities to facilitate effective communication and prompt resolution of issues.
He explained that representatives from the affected communities in Ughelli South and Udu Local Government Areas would work closely with government officials to address concerns as they arise and maintain a peaceful environment for the project.
Izeze also advised the contractor to engage qualified personnel in line with the technical requirements of the project while ensuring that the interests of the host communities were adequately considered.
He disclosed that government officials and the management of Niger Cat Construction Limited would next Wednesday pay courtesy visits to the traditional rulers of the affected communities to seek their cooperation and blessings before the commencement of major construction activities.
Speaking after the meeting, the Project Manager of Niger Cat Construction Limited, Engineer George, described the engagement as productive, saying it provided an opportunity to resolve key issues ahead of mobilisation to site.
“It was a very productive meeting. We discussed the commencement of the project and resolved the major issues before moving to the site. The aim is to ensure that every challenge is addressed before work begins. We appreciate His Excellency for the support,” he said.
Also speaking, the Community Representative for the project, Olorogun Godwin Sito, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting, saying the framework agreed upon would strengthen collaboration between the contractor and the host communities.
He pledged to work with stakeholders across the two local government areas to sustain peace and ensure the successful execution of the project.
The rehabilitation and reconstruction of the ECN/Otu-Jeremi/Udu Road is expected to significantly improve connectivity between communities in Ughelli South and Udu Local Government Areas, ease the movement of people and goods, and stimulate socio-economic development across the corridor.
