ABUJA — Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has received the Christian Icon Award from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), bringing renewed attention to the place of integrity, faith and public accountability in leadership.

Okpebholo received the award on Saturday at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, during CAN’s 50th anniversary celebration, marking five decades of the association’s engagement with the Christian community and national development.

CAN President, Most Rev. (Dr.) Daniel C. Okoh, and the co-chairmen of the anniversary planning committee, Boss Mustapha, CFR, and Archbishop Michael Akinwale, said the award recognised the governor’s commitment to compassionate public service, ethical leadership and Christian values in governance. They added that his public service contributions and impact on the Christian community continued to inspire people across the country.

The organisers said the honour was intended to recognise leaders who demonstrate integrity, excellence and commitment to nation-building while upholding the principles of faith and service in political office.

Reacting, Okpebholo described the recognition as both humbling and a motivation to intensify his service to the people.

“I am humbled by this recognition from CAN. It is a reminder that leadership is service, and it pushes me to do more for the people of Edo State and for Nigeria,” he said.

Since assuming office on November 12, 2024, the governor has anchored his administration on the SHINE Agenda, which prioritises security, healthcare, infrastructure, natural resources, agriculture and education.

The award comes with heightened expectations that the administration will translate its stated commitments into measurable improvements in the lives of Edo residents. Progress in security, healthcare delivery, infrastructure, agricultural development and education will remain important indicators of the administration’s impact.

Founded in 1976, CAN is the umbrella body of Christian denominations in Nigeria. Its Golden Jubilee celebrates the association’s contributions to the Christian community and national development, while renewing attention to the values of service, unity and responsible leadership.

For Edo State, the significance of the recognition will ultimately be reinforced by sustained governance outcomes that demonstrate how the principles celebrated by CAN translate into better living conditions and inclusive development for the people.
