The Presidency on Wednesday dismissed allegations by the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, that he is being targeted and intimidated by the Federal Government, describing the claims as false, misleading and intended to attract public sympathy.
In a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency said the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu has neither the time nor the inclination to be distracted by Obi’s allegations.
The statement was in response to Obi’s recent claims that government agents were behind an incident involving his vehicle at an airport and that he was being systematically intimidated ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to Onanuga, Obi’s account of the airport incident was unfounded, noting that by the former governor’s own narration, the issue arose from an alleged breach of parking regulations rather than any government action.
The presidential spokesman accused Obi of habitually dragging the government into what he described as personal inconveniences through what he termed exaggerations and baseless allegations.
He also dismissed Obi’s claims that his life could be in danger before the January 2027 election and that influential individuals were being pressured not to invite him to public and private events.
The Presidency described the allegations as a fabricated narrative lacking evidence, insisting they were designed to divert attention from what it called Obi’s “credibility deficit” and challenges within his political camp.
Onanuga further addressed concerns surrounding Obi’s reported interest in Fidelity Bank, stating that the financial institution was not under any form of government persecution.
He maintained that the bank continues to benefit from the economic reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration and dismissed suggestions that the government was targeting the institution because of Obi’s association with it.
Reaffirming the administration’s priorities, the Presidency said the Federal Government remains committed to implementing economic reforms aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians.
It added that President Tinubu’s administration would remain focused on governance and national development rather than what it described as Obi’s “self-serving narratives” and unverifiable claims.
