For the third time in a week, the National Grid has again collapsed throwing Nigerians into total blackouts.
The grid collapse occurred early Saturday morning, with many states reporting power failure in their domains. This latest power failure comes on the heels of two earlier collapses in the week. A situation that has put so much pressure on the already fragile power supply system.
Data obtained from the Nigerian System Operator’s portal (niggrid.org), revealed that the grid recorded an unprecedented zero Megawatts (MW) as of 8:16 am Saturday with all the 22 generation companies (GenCos) down as of the time of this report.
The latest collapse will make it the eighth time of such collapse in the year 2024 alone. It all began on 4 February, when Nigeria experienced its first blackout of 2024. The national grid collapsed at approximately 11:51 am caved in as its capacity tumbled from 2,407 megawatts to just 31MW by noon, and it completely shut down by 1 pm.
